Drs. Young and Kropilak implanted the Endologix Powerlink XL, a minimally invasive device that was approved on Oct. 29, 2008, by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of abdominal aortic aneurysms.
"The procedure was very successful," said Dr. Young. "The new Powerlink XL system enables us to better treat our patients and lowers the risks compared to open surgery."
Abdominal aortic aneurysm is a weakening in the wall of the abdominal aorta, which results in a balloon-like enlargement. Approximately 1.7 million Americans have this condition, and the incidence increases with age. Ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm is the 13th leading cause of death in the United States.
