The physicians of Premier Surgical Associates in Knoxville and Cleveland, TN, are experienced in performing cancer surgery.
What is cancer surgery?
Cancer surgery is basically a type of surgical procedure used to treat cancer.
Traditionally, surgeons perform cancer surgery by removing all of cancer, including the healthy surrounding tissues. In many cases, lymph nodes in the affected site are also removed to check the spread of cancer and determine other forms of treatment.
For example, in breast cancer surgery, surgeons may remove all of the breast or part of the breast and some of its surrounding tissues.
There are other types and techniques of cancer surgery our surgeons may use to treat cancer. This may include:
Cryosurgery
This surgical technique uses very cold temperatures to kill cancer cells. Using liquid nitrogen, cryosurgery is usually used for skin and cervical cancer.
Laser surgery
Instead of instruments, laser surgery uses beams of light energy to remove very small cancers, shrink or destroy tumors, or activate drugs that kill cancer cells. This surgical technique is often used in cancer types affecting hard to reach areas. This includes cancer of the skin, cervix, larynx, and rectum.
Laparoscopic and Robotically-Assisted Surgery
Laparoscopic and robotically-assisted procedures use tiny incisions and a lighted camera tube to view the organs and tissue. The surgeon inserts small instruments usually into the abdomen, and controls them with his or her hands or, with robotic surgery, from a computer console. This minimally-invasive approach often means less pain and a quicker recovery time for patients.
The type of technique used to remove cancer depends on factors including the physical condition of the patient, and the type, location, and size of cancer.
