With summer just around the corner, you may be wondering if it’s possible to enjoy your planned trips with hemorrhoids.
The experts at Premier Hemorrhoid Treatment Center in Knoxville, TN have some tips on how you can do that:
Invest in a good quality hemorrhoid pillow or cushion
If you’ll be sitting for long periods of time, we highly recommend getting a quality hemorrhoid pillow. The extra cushion can help ease the pressure on the hemorrhoids, reducing your pain/discomfort.
Take mini-breaks
Being on your seat for too long is not healthy and could aggravate your hemorrhoid symptoms.
Whether you’re traveling by land or air, it’s important to take mini-breaks. If you’re driving, stop for a while to stand up and stretch. If you’re traveling by air, stand up, walk back and forth in the aisle (if it’s safe to do so) to get that blood flowing and ease the pressure on your bum.
Include fiber in your diet
Straining from either constipation or diarrhea can worsen your hemorrhoids symptoms. One way of avoiding that is by making sure you have enough fiber (both soluble and insoluble) in your diet.
For an adult, it is recommended to have 25 to 30 grams of fiber per day.
Drink plenty of water
Sufficient hydration is as important as having enough fiber in your diet.
Drinking water is still the best way to remain hydrated. It’s zero calories and widely available.
To remind yourself to drink water and to track how much you’re drinking, bring a refillable water bottle with you everywhere you go.
Include exercise in your routine
Exercise is another way of keeping your colon healthy. If you already have hemorrhoids, we recommend low-impact activities such as walking and swimming. Physical straining from activities like weight lifting can only worsen your hemorrhoids and may even cause flare-ups. So we recommend doing this with caution.
If your hemorrhoids are taking a toll on your quality of life, we can help.
