Premier Surgical Associates of Knoxville and Cleveland, TN, has a large team of board-certified and well-experienced general surgeons who are committed to providing the best surgical care for our patients.
What does a general surgeon do?
A general surgeon is a physician who has been educated and trained to diagnose and provide a variety of preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative care to patients.
To become a general surgeon, one has to have extensive knowledge of human anatomy and physiology, emergency and intensive care, metabolism, nutrition, immunology, pathology, wound healing, and shock and resuscitation
A general surgeon can make a diagnosis and provide surgical management of the body’s different systems, including the alimentary tract, the endocrine system, the abdomen, and its contents, and the breast, skin, and soft tissues
Meet Dr. David J. Harrell, MD, FACS
Dr. David Harrell is one of our general surgeons. He has been with us since 2001 and you can find him in our Tennova office – in North Knoxville and our Surgery Center at Papermill Drive.
We interviewed him to help you understand better a general surgeon’s role in your care:
“I’m focused mainly on general surgery with endocrine system involvement. I do thyroid, parathyroid, robotic surgery specializing in hernia repair, reflux, and esophagitis. I also do a lot of colon resection robotically, usually intra-abdominal surgery
I love being a surgeon and being of help to patients surgically.”
