Iron Issues and Anemia

It is a well-accepted idea that iron absorption and anemia can be altered by malabsoptive surgeries such as Roux En Y Gastric Bypass (RYGB) and biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch (BPD-DS). There are multiple variables involved that have both negative and positive effects on iron absorption but the overall incidence of anemia increase from an average of 12 percent before surgery to about 23 percent afterward. To understand this you must have a basic understanding of how iron is absorbed.
