Shine a Light on Skin Cancer: Why Melanoma Awareness Matters

by | May 5, 2025 | Skin Cancer

May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month — a time to shine a spotlight on melanoma, the most dangerous form of skin cancer. At Premier Surgical Associates, with locations in Knoxville, Cleveland, and Johnson City, Tennessee, we want to empower you with knowledge that could save your life or the life of someone you love.

Skin Cancer

What Makes Melanoma So Serious?

Melanoma starts in the pigment-producing cells of the skin, called melanocytes. Unlike other skin cancers like basal cell carcinoma or squamous cell carcinoma, melanoma is much more likely to spread if it isn’t caught early. That’s what makes awareness and early detection so vital — it truly makes the difference between life and death.

Early Detection = Lifesaving Results

Here’s the good news: melanoma is highly treatable when found early. The five-year survival rate is an incredible 99% if caught in its earliest stage. However, that rate drops dramatically to just 27% if it spreads to distant parts of the body. That’s why spotting changes on your skin early — and acting on them — is so important.

Know What to Look For: The ABCDEs of Melanoma

Not sure what to watch for? The ABCDE rule is a great guide when checking your skin:

  • A – Asymmetry: One half of the mole looks different from the other
  • B – Border: The edges are uneven, blurred, or notched
  • C – Color: Look for multiple or unusual colors in one mole
  • D – Diameter: Larger than a pencil eraser (¼ inch), though melanomas can be smaller
  • E – Evolving: Watch for any changes over time in size, shape, or color

If anything seems unusual or new, don’t wait — get it checked.

Prevention: Your Best Defense

Protecting your skin from the sun’s UV rays is the most effective way to lower your melanoma risk. Here are a few habits that go a long way:

  • Ditch the tanning bed and skip the sunburns altogether
  • Apply sunscreen daily (SPF 15+ for everyday use, SPF 30+ for extended outdoor activity)
  • Dress smart with wide-brimmed hats, long sleeves, and UV-blocking sunglasses
  • Stay out of direct sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
  • Be mindful of reflections — water, snow, and sand can intensify UV exposure

Make Skin Checks a Routine

Your skin is your body’s largest organ — give it the attention it deserves. We recommend:

  • Annual skin exams with a healthcare provider
  • Monthly self-checks for new spots or changes to existing moles

At Premier Surgical Associates, our team is experienced in diagnosing and removing skin cancers. If you have concerns about a mole or skin lesion, don’t delay getting it evaluated.
