Hemorrhoids are swollen veins in or around the rectum, affecting millions of Americans. They can develop as a result of increased pressure in the anal area as a result of pregnancy, constant straining during bowel movements, and obesity. Infrared coagulation (also called IFC) is a minimally-invasive and non-surgical, gentle laser treatment for hemorrhoids.

Infrared Coagulation for Hemorrhoids

The Infrared Coagulation procedure uses a small probe is to expose the vein above the hemorrhoid to short bursts of warm light. The heat caused by this light leads to the formation of scar tissue which cuts off the blood supply to the hemorrhoid causing the hemorrhoid to shrink and recede.

What to Expect During and After IFC

IFC is typically performed at a doctor’s office, with short treatment times. There may be some slight discomfort during the procedure, but it does not require anesthesia and patients report that it is virtually pain free. IFC is much less invasive than traditional methods and requires no downtime.

During the procedure, it’s normal to feel some heat when the laser light is exposed to the affected area. Some people may also experience having a ‘full’ sensation on their lower abdominal area. For some, it may be a similar sensation to the urge to have a bowel movement.

If you’re having mild discomfort immediately following the procedure, you can sit in a shallow tub of warm water for 15 minutes to help relieve any pain. About 7 to 10 days after the procedure, the hemorrhoid will shrink and disappear. It is normal to sometimes experience bleeding at this stage. However, if there is bleeding at all, it is minimal and stops by itself.
