Dr. Jessica Vinsant and Dr. Ana Wilson are surgeons who share a passion for helping patients facing a cancer diagnosis. Their paths have led them to Premier Surgical Associates in Knoxville where they work tirelessly to treat women and men during their battles with cancer.
Dr. Jessica Vinsant is a fourth-generation physician in East Tennessee. She is a General and Breast Surgeon with Premier Surgical in North Knoxville. Vinsant was Chief of Surgery at Tennova from 2019-2022, where she was recognized as Tennova Physician of the Year in 2017 and Tennova Humanitarian Award in 2019. She is the Cancer Liaison Physician for Commission on Cancer and Medical Director of the Tennova Breast Program.
Dr. Vinsant always knew that she would like to pursue medicine, having grown up surrounded by it. As a teen, she went on call with her father, an anesthesiologist, and fell in love with the operating room. In medical school, she tried to keep an open mind but, “there was just nothing else like being in the operating room and seeing the immediate results of your care.” As Dr. Vinsant began in practice, she explains that “there was an open niche to help patients with breast conditions, especially cancer. I developed a passion for working with these patients.”
Dr. Vinsant is an advocate for breast cancer patients in East Tennessee, volunteering as a board member for the Cancer Support Community of East Tennessee and the Susan B. Komen Knoxville organization. She notes that although strides are being made in breast cancer treatment, sadly there are still many women and men who must face a diagnosis.
Dr. Ana Wilson’s decision to enter the medical field stemmed from a desire to serve others. During her general surgery residency, she had two wonderful mentors, Surgical Oncologists, who inspired her with their ability to form meaningful relationships with patients, supporting them through the difficult journey of cancer. Dr. Wilson subsequently chose Surgical Oncology because she wanted to have the same opportunity to help others face and come through what can be the most tough and fearful time of their lives. She notes, “this type of practice embodied the reason I went to medical school in the first place.” She is based at the Premier Surgical at Fort Sanders Regional office.
Dr. Wilson believes strongly in the concept of shared decision-making, that patient’s take an active part in their care, and feel supported by their physician. She is so grateful that in East Tennessee, she has found many fantastic local organizations who also support and assist folks going through a challenging medical diagnosis of cancer. Three that top her list include the Cancer Support Community of East Tennessee, Breast Connect and the local chapter of the American Cancer Society.
Dr. Vinsant, a Knoxville native, and Dr. Wilson, a recent transplant, both enjoy all Knoxville has to offer. Outside of their work requirements, both women support various organizations, most notably, Cancer Support Community of East Tennessee which provides no-cost programming and support to those affected by cancer, including family members.
