Vascular ultrasound is a general term used for non-invasive, painless tests that use high-frequency sound waves. It’s non-invasive and painless as it doesn’t require the use of needles, dyes, radiation, or anesthesia.
These tests are used to create images of the blood vessels, including the arteries and the veins.
How does the vascular ultrasound work?
During the vascular ultrasound, sound waves are transmitted from the probe through the gel into the areas being examined. The transducer (the small handheld device) collects the sounds that bounce back and then the computer uses those sound waves to create an image.
When is the vascular ultrasound used?
Vascular ultrasound may be recommended by your medical provider for any of the following reasons:
- Monitor blood flow to organs and tissues
- Identify and locate blockages and abnormalities in the blood vessels
- Determine blood clots in the major veins of the arms and legs
- Determine whether you are a good candidate for vascular procedures like angioplasty
- Evaluate the outcome of vascular procedures
- Determine enlargement of the arteries (also known as aneurysms)
- Identify the source and determine the severity of varicose veins
How long is the test?
The test takes about 30 to 90 minutes to complete.
How to prepare for the test?
The test doesn’t require any special preparation. You can still have your usual meal and take your medications before the test.
During the test, you will lie on an examining table and a small amount of water-soluble gel will be applied to the area to be examined. A small hand-held device called a transducer will be placed on the gel-coated area. It is this transducer that collects the sound waves that the computer uses to produce an image.
Once the test is completed, you may continue with your usual activities. The test will be reviewed by a vascular specialist and the final report will be discussed with you.
