Our colorectal surgical team is growing and we’re happy to welcome Dr. Sung Lee!
Dr. Lee is one of our Colon and Rectal surgeons at our Premier Surgical Fort Sanders Regional office in Knoxville.

Dr. Lee earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia (Augusta University). He completed his General Surgery Residency at the University of Tennessee School of Medicine in Knoxville, and his Colon and Rectal Surgery Fellowship at the Colon and Rectal Clinic of Orlando with Orlando Health in Florida.

Let’s get to know him more…

What is your special surgical area(s) of interest?
“As a colorectal surgeon, I treat colon and rectal cancer, and Inflammatory Bowel Disease such as Crohn’s and Ulcerative Colitis. I’m very focused on minimally invasive surgery, especially robotic surgery–I’m very fascinated about robotic surgery. That’s really what drew me to medicine.
I also treat anorectal diseases such as hemorrhoids and fissures.”

Why did you choose colorectal surgery as your specialty?
“Colorectal surgery has a very wide spectrum of practice – from hemorrhoids to diseases of the bowel and the rectum, to more complex surgeries. Colon and rectal cancer was very intriguing to me because it can be curable. I feel like I can be a big help to others. It’s rewarding.”

What’s your personal philosophy in taking care of your patients?
“I treat my patients the way I treat my family. I want them to feel comfortable and I want to listen to them rather than only giving them what I think needs to be done. Collaborating with my patients is important to me.”

Dr. Lee at Mount Everest’s Base Camp. The trip was a 10 day climb up and a 4 day journey back down.

Why did you decide to join Premier Surgical in Knoxville?
“It was an easy decision for us because we wanted to come back to Knoxville. We loved it while we were here for my residency, and Premier Surgical has such a great reputation in Knoxville. I also know a few surgeons at Premier either from school or through other connections.”

Is there anything else you’d like your patients to know about you?
“I love traveling. Before I started my residency, I went to Everest Base Camp at 17598 ft. for 10 days up and 4 days down with a couple of my friends. It was a great experience! This was before the big earthquake that happened in 2015. I also have a big heart in mission work. I spent a month in Kenya at Tenwek Mission Hospital where I helped the residents learn laparoscopic skills. And of course, I have a new member of my house, fourteen-month-old Isaiah. I spend as much time with him and my wife Cameron as I can.”
