Breast Cancer Awareness
Every October, we recognize the brave women who are fighters and survivors of Breast Cancer. Roughly 1 in 8 U.S. women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. That’s a little over 12% of the female population. Besides skin cancer, breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among American women.
As of January 2018, there are more than 3.1 million women with a history of breast cancer in the United States. A woman’s risk of breast cancer nearly doubles if she has a first-degree relative who has been previously diagnosed.
Early Detection
It is well-known that early detection plays a big role in the survival rate of any cancer. The physicians of Premier Surgical Associates in Knoxville encourage adult women of all ages to perform breast self-exams at least once a month. While mammograms can help you to detect cancer before you can feel a lump, breast self-exams help you to be familiar with how your breasts look and feel so you can alert your doctor if there are any changes.
After the age of 40, it is important for women to start having annual mammograms, as the risk for breast cancer increases with age. However, if a woman has a history of breast cancer in her family, annual mammograms may start earlier.
