Aging is inevitable but how you age is another story. It’s completely up to you!

At Premier Surgical Associates of Knoxville and Cleveland, we believe that healthy aging is a holistic approach. It’s not just about physical health; it’s being healthy and well in these areas – mental, physical, and emotional.

We love to see you age well. We’ve outlined some of the healthy aging tips that can help you out:

  • Stay active
This may not come as a surprise to you. Regular exercise can keep you physically and mentally well.

You don’t really have to sign up for a gym membership to stay active. Even simple activities like walking and cycling can make a lot of difference when done on a regular basis.

If it’s your first time to be really active, consult your doctor to see what would work best for you and if you have any limitations.

  • Watch what you eat
Avoid highly-processed food and stick to whole foods as possible. If you have certain dietary restrictions or needs, make sure to follow your dietitian’s recommendations.
  • Don’t skimp on your sleep
Did you know that constant sleep deprivation increases your risk of heart and other diseases?

In order for the body to rejuvenate, you need to get about 7 to 9 hours of sleep each night. You can do this by sticking to a consistent bedtime schedule or routine.
  • Engage your brain
About 1 in 8 older adults in the United States suffer from Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of cognitive decline. Research shows that continuous brain stimulation can slow these down.

Keep your brain active. Learn a language, solve puzzles, or read books – no matter what it is, it’s important to engage your brain as you age.
  • Stay social
Staying socially active can be healthy for you as you age. Stay connected with people who matter most to you. If there’s no one nearby, you can use technology and catch up with them.
