Premier Surgical general surgeon Dr. Norma Edwards grew up with a strong interest in science and biology. She originally planned to earn a PHD and become a laboratory researcher, but instead, pursued a career as a physician.
“I realized I was way too social to be a researcher in a lab all day,” laughs Dr. Edwards.
During a stint shadowing a neurosurgeon, Dr. Edwards discovered a love for surgery. “With surgery I love that you see a problem and as a surgeon, you can make an intervention and see a result for the patient.”
After graduating from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, she earned her medical degree and completed her residency in General Surgery at the University of Tennessee in Memphis.
“I enjoy general surgery because I love working on a wide variety of cases and procedures. I like forming that relationship with a patient, making a plan of care with them, and following them over time,” explains Dr. Edwards.
After practicing general surgery in Memphis for eight years with Memphis Surgery Associates, Dr. Edwards has joined Premier Surgical Associates in Knoxville. She’s based at the group’s Parkwest Medical Center office.
“I’m thrilled to be back in Knoxville,” she says. Besides attending college in Knoxville, Dr. Edwards comes from a long line of University of Tennessee Alumni and grew up cheering for the Vols.
“I love Knoxville! Everyone here is so friendly and the mountains are just gorgeous!” And, the fact that Dr. Edwards’ parents, sister and brother also live in Knoxville, make it even sweeter.
When she’s not at the hospital, Dr. Edwards actively enjoys running half-marathons, biking, traveling, and scuba diving. But, medicine and surgery remain her passion.
“I love having an active role in affecting a positive change. It’s great to see the result when you successfully treat a patient.”
