Recognizing GERD Awareness Week 2025: Understanding Acid Reflux and Advanced Treatment Options at Premier Surgical Associates
GERD Awareness Week 2025 is November 23–29, a time dedicated to educating Americans about Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), one of the most common digestive disorders in the U.S. At Premier Surgical Associates, with East Tennessee offices in Knoxville, Cleveland, and Johnson City, Tennessee, our goal is to help patients recognize the symptoms of GERD early and find lasting relief through the most advanced treatment options available.
What Is GERD?
Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) occurs when stomach acid frequently flows back into the esophagus, the tube connecting your mouth and stomach. This backward flow, or acid reflux, happens when the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), a muscular valve that normally closes after swallowing, becomes weak or relaxes at the wrong time. Over time, repeated exposure to stomach acid can irritate and damage the esophageal lining.
Causes and Symptoms of GERD
Several factors can contribute to GERD, including:
- Obesity or excess abdominal pressure
- Hiatal hernia
- Smoking
- Certain foods (such as caffeine, spicy foods, chocolate, and citrus)
- Medications that relax the LES
The most common symptom of GERD is heartburn, often described as a burning sensation in the chest, especially after eating or lying down. Other symptoms may include:
- Regurgitation of food or sour liquid
- Chronic cough or hoarseness
- Chest pain
- Difficulty swallowing
- Sore throat or dental erosion
If you experience acid reflux more than twice a week, it may be time to talk to a specialist. Left untreated, GERD can lead to more serious complications like esophageal inflammation, ulcers, or Barrett’s esophagus.
Advanced GERD Treatments at Premier Surgical
At Premier Surgical Associates, we understand that GERD isn’t one-size-fits-all. Our board-certified surgeons offer a range of minimally invasive and incisionless procedures tailored to your specific needs, including:
- Nissen Fundoplication: Tightens the LES by wrapping the upper stomach around the lower esophagus to prevent reflux.
- LINX® Reflux Management System: A small magnetic ring placed around the LES to strengthen it while allowing food to pass normally.
- Transoral Incisionless Fundoplication (TIF): A completely incisionless procedure performed through the mouth to reinforce the LES.
- Hiatal Hernia Repair: Often performed alongside reflux surgery to correct an underlying anatomical cause.
These state-of-the-art procedures help patients find lasting relief and return to a normal lifestyle free from daily medications and discomfort.
