Appendix Cancer: Signs, Symptoms, and How Premier Surgical Associates Can Help

by | Dec 22, 2025 | Appendicitis

Appendix cancer (also called appendiceal cancer) is rare, but studies show it’s being diagnosed more often, especially in Gen X and Millennial adults. Because many cases are found unexpectedly during surgery for appendicitis or other abdominal issues, awareness of the signs and treatment options is essential.

Appendix Cancer

What Is Appendix Cancer?

The appendix is a small pouch attached to the large intestine on the lower right side of your abdomen. Appendix cancer occurs when abnormal cells grow in the lining of the appendix and form a tumor. Most people don’t have clear risk factors, and in many cases, the cancer is discovered incidentally during an appendectomy (appendix removal) or imaging for another problem.

Signs and Symptoms of Appendix Cancer

Appendix cancer may not cause symptoms early on. When symptoms do appear, they can mimic common conditions like appendicitis, irritable bowel syndrome, or ovarian problems. Possible signs include:

  • Sudden or worsening pain in the lower right abdomen
  • Pain that starts near the belly button and moves to the right side
  • Abdominal bloating or swelling
  • A growing or noticeable increase in waistline size
  • Changes in bowel habits (constipation or diarrhea)
  • Nausea, vomiting, or loss of appetite
  • Fluid buildup in the abdomen (ascites)

Because these symptoms overlap with many other conditions, it’s important not to ignore persistent or worsening abdominal pain.

How Is Appendix Cancer Treated?

Treatment depends on the type and stage of the tumor, as well as your overall health. Common options include:

  • Surgery – Often the first and most important treatment. This may include an appendectomy alone or more extensive surgery to remove part of the colon and nearby tissue if cancer has spread.
  • Advanced cancer surgery – In some cases, surgery may involve removing areas of the lining of the abdomen (peritoneum) if cancer has spread there.
  • Chemotherapy – Given through a vein or, in select cases, directly into the abdomen (a specialized approach used in certain advanced cases) to kill remaining cancer cells.
  • Ongoing surveillance – Regular imaging and follow-up visits to monitor for recurrence or progression.
