Many of us will be traveling for the holidays. However, you have one uncomfortable problem – your hemorrhoids. Don’t let them stop you from having fun this holiday season, because it IS possible to travel comfortably with hemorrhoids.
Our experts at Premier Surgical Hemorrhoid Treatment Center in Knoxville, TN offer these tips to help you travel more comfortably with hemorrhoids.
• Get a good quality hemorrhoid cushion or pillow
A good quality cushion/pillow can come handy especially if you’ll be sitting for long periods of time. It can ease the pressure and keep your hemorrhoid symptoms like pain from getting worse.
• Pack high fiber snacks
A good amount of fiber in your diet keeps you full for long and also prevents constipation – one of the risk factors for hemorrhoids.
Women need about 25 grams of fiber each day while men need about 38 grams.
Some of the high fiber foods that are good for snacking include almonds, popcorn, pear, and whole grain bread.
• Take mini breaks
Even if you have a good cushion or pillow to sit on, it’s still always a good idea to stay active. One way of doing it while traveling is by taking mini breaks.
If you’re traveling by plane or train, take a few minutes to walk back and forth the aisle (if safe to do so) to get the blood flowing and ease the pressure. If you’re on a road trip, take mini breaks to stand up and stretch your legs out.
• Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate
Staying hydrated is as important as having a sufficient amount of fiber in your diet and exercising.
When it comes to hydration, water is still the best source. It’s zero calories and it’s cheaper. You can always add slices of refreshing lemon or cucumber to add flavor to it.
Hemorrhoids can be a nuisance. If over the counter medications and home remedies do not help alleviate your symptoms and your hemorrhoids continually keep you from living your best life, we can help.
